Just finishing your legal studies but no next steps lined up? In your early stages of a legal career but thinking about exploring your options? Working in an advice or legal environment but looking to join a great organisation with development opportunity and the chance to get more involved in hearings?
If you can say yes to any of these questions you may want to consider joining the GMC as a Tribunal Clerk.
About the role
Tribunal Clerk’s play a key role providing high level administrative support to our Tribunals that make decisions regarding registrant’s fitness to practise. A typical day may consist of preparing some initial documentation for a Tribunal, followed by supporting them as the hearing progresses sharing the relevant case law or guidance that the Tribunal may need to support them with their decision making. You’ll carefully be listening to the legal arguments being made, taking notes so that you can start to prepare the start of a draft determination so that once the Tribunal has reached their decision they can finalise their written reasons and hand down their decision to the parties. You’ll ensure that clear information is sent to the registrant after the hearing so they understand what the decision means and then ensure that the Medical Register is updated so that the public has the right information about whether a registrant is fit to practise. If the parties have any questions you will be on hand to help them.
A large number of our hearings take place in central Manchester so while you are supporting a hearing you will be based in the hearing centre everyday- we have a fantastic central location and most hearings end by 5pm each day so you can enjoy all that the City has to offer! Some of our hearings may take place virtually and if you are supporting a virtual hearing you can work from home or the hearing centre- whichever you prefer! We ensure that there is time to focus on your development, by getting involved in wider work to support the MPTS.
We’re committed to supporting career progression, many former Tribunal Clerks have moved into permanent roles across the GMC, from project work and decision‑making to people management. Others have used the practical experience gained in this role as a springboard into a legal career.
We know the flexibility to work from home matters. While you’ll need to be onsite for the duration of each hearing, most Tribunal Clerks averaged less than seven days a month in the hearing centre over a two-month period this year. This role does require some flexibility, but we balance this with plenty of remote working time.
We have excellent salaries with in band progression as well as some amazing benefits so if you want to learn more before applying come and ask us!
