GMC Lay and Medical Council Member

Welcome, and thank you for your interest in the role of Council Member for the General Medical Council (GMC).

The successful candidates will work closely with our existing Council members and the GMC’s senior management team to drive forward our corporate strategy 2021-25, and our 2030 vision to be an effective, relevant and compassionate regulator for patients, the public and professionals, and as an employer.

We’re also leading vital work to tackle persistent inequalities in the medical profession and effect positive change. This is part of our programme of targets which include addressing disproportionate fitness to practise referrals and unfairness in medical education and training.

As the UK’s health services continue to face unprecedented challenge, it is more important than ever that we support those we regulate to deliver safe high-quality patient care. The successful candidate(s) will drive forward our vision with high personal credibility, strong diplomatic skills, and the ability to build and manage effective relationships.

We want to ensure that we adapt and innovate, to play our part in delivering better healthcare and patient protection through ensuring high standards of medical education, training, and practice. The UK government’s plans for regulatory reform, which includes the start of regulation for physician associates and anaesthesia associates, is a great opportunity for us to realise many of our ambitions. Working hand-in-hand with our regulatory partners, building, and strengthening our collective endeavours, will be vital to our success. Delivering operational excellence while working under the scrutiny of the profession and public means the leadership task is a significant one.

You will join an organisation with a compelling public mission, a reputation for excellence in its work, and a central position at the heart of the wider health and care system. We have a strong collaborative culture, and supportive and welcoming colleagues and our staff say this is a great place to work.

We’re committed to being a diverse and inclusive organisation; one that reflects those we work with and for.  Increasing the diversity of our leadership is a key priority, so we actively encourage those from diverse backgrounds and experiences to apply. We are committed to ensuring we have diverse long and shortlists before we proceed.

As a Council member, you’ll make a real difference. If you feel that this is the right opportunity for you, we look forward to receiving your application.
