Equality, Diversity and Inclusion Officer

The General Medical Council (GMC) helps to protect patients and improve medical education and practice in the UK by setting standards for students and doctors. We support them in achieving (and exceeding) those standards and take action when they are not met.  The medical profession is diverse, as are the patients we help to protect.  Equality, diversity and inclusion (ED&I) is therefore integral to everything we do both as a regulator and as an employer.

Our ED&I commitments are driven by our ambition to make progress in tackling persistent issues related to inequality, and to achieve positive changes and outcomes for the diverse groups we work with and work for. Having a diverse and inclusive workforce, both within the GMC and in healthcare systems across the UK, is vital.

As the ED&I Officer you will provide support to the ED&I team, across a range of activities, to enable the GMC to achieve its vision of being a fair and inclusive regulator and employer. You will work closely with internal colleagues across the organisation to support our ED&I strategic objectives and engage with external stakeholders who represent diverse groups.  

We are looking for an individual who has knowledge and understanding of the equality legal framework, including the public sector equality duty, and experience of working in an ED&I function or on ED&I as part of a wider role.  You will be responsible for a range of activities including developing data and insight reports, researching best practice on ED&I, and helping the team to raise awareness both internally and externally of ED&I and the work we do to be a fair and inclusive regulator and employer.

Due to Covid 19, the successful applicant will commence working from home with a supportive induction package, with a plan to return to an office based role at a later date. As with our usual arrangements we will be able to offer up to two working from home days per week once we have returned to the office.
